What Do We Really Know About "Clean" Haircare?

Posted by NatureLab Tokyo on

At NatureLab Tokyo, we source the most potent plants, isolating and concentrating their active nutrient-rich elements, and infusing them into clean, performance-driven formulas.

Our science is simple – clean ingredients. That means no sulfates, parabens, phthalates, gluten, mineral oil, or harsh chemicals. When sticking to a clean beauty ritual, it’s important to look for products that don’t include these ingredients.

But do you know what some of these avoidable ingredients are? Let’s test your knowledge!

Parabens

Do you know how harmful parabens are for your body?

Parabens are a group of chemicals found in many hair and body care products. Most cosmetics contain ingredients that can biodegrade, so parabens are added to prevent and reduce the growth of bacteria and mold in order for products to last longer in your beauty cabinet. While, in theory, this sounds great but – parabens can disrupt hormones in the body and create issues for your fertility, reproductive organs, and increase the risk of cancer. Stick to hair products that are made without parabens.

Sulfates

Did you know that sulfates are found in personal care AND cleaning products?

Sulfate is a salt that forms when sulfuric acid reacts with another chemical. It can irritate eyes, skin, and lungs, especially when used long-term. If you see “sulfates” listed on your shampoo bottle, it’s time to replace it with one of our shampoos, free of sulfates.

Phthalates

Did you know that phthalates are a group of chemicals used to make plastics more durable?

When looking at products that aren't clean, there’s a good chance you will find that phthalates are responsible for creating the bottle that your product is in. It’s hard to track and determine how dangerous phthalates are for your body because of eating, drinking, and using products that contain them. Our haircare products are made free of phthalates.

Mineral Oils

You’ve probably seen mineral oil included in many of your beauty products. But did you know mineral oil is bad for your hair?

Mineral oil is a by-product of petrolatum. It is an inert ingredient, meaning it does not go bad easily – making it harmful when you’re overusing it. Not only is it just bad for your hair, but it also creates product buildup on your scalp and can clog pores, leading to hair loss and other hair growth issues.

Other Common Chemicals

While you may not be able to avoid many of these without going the clean route, here are a few common chemicals found in various beauty products.
