Whether we are inspired by Instagram pics flooding our feeds or if we’re dying to reinvent ourselves, short hair is beyond appealing. But before you go and take the plunge, there are a few things to consider. After all, hair does grow back painfully slow and you don’t want to end up with a decision you’ll regret. We spoke to celebrity hairstylist and NatureLab. TOKYO brand ambassador Andrew Fitzsimons and stylist & co-owner of Cutler Salon x Arlo SoHo Jenny Spalding to break down all the things we should consider before committing to short hair. Scroll down to see what they had to say.
Short Hair Is For Everyone
The good news: anyone can pull off short hair. “Rocking any hair style is really all about your confidence; this will determine whether you can carry it off or not,” says Spalding. “What’s more important is having a stylist that understands your face shape and texture, and can tailor the style accordingly.” Fitzsimons agrees and says it’s important to consult with your stylist beforehand to discuss all of the options to find the best style for you.
Bring In Inspiration
Do your research and bring in photos for your stylist as a reference. “It is important for the stylist to have a visual reference as client; stylist diction can be very different,” says Spalding. “This will avoid any unwanted surprises when it comes to the cut.”
Hair Grows Back Really Slowly
Fitzsimons says hair generally takes about one month to grow half an inch. While it may seem like a good idea to just chop everything off, he warns against it. Instead, he suggests gradually cutting inches off to ease you into the idea of short hair. “You don't want to have any regrets as hair takes longer to grow back than it does to chop off.” he says.
There’s Always A Fix If You Hate Your New Short Hair
If you’re not feeling your new do, Spalding says to go back to your stylist to talk about different style options. Fitzsimons says if you’re missing the long length you can use extensions or wigs. Regardless, you’ll want to make sure your hair is moisturized and frizz free. He recommends something like NatureLab Tokyo's Perfect Smooth Collection to keep hair smooth and hydrated.
With those four things in mind, you’ll be more than ready for this big change. Don’t worry — we’re sure you’ll love it.
