Proper Way To Wash Your Hair

Proper Way To Wash Your Hair

How to shampoo & condition your hair the right way

It’s never too late to learn how to properly wash your hair—and it’s not uncommon to find out that you’ve been doing it wrong! For your healthiest hair and scalp, experts recommend you adjust your routine to your hair type and most importantly, take your time. Practice (and patience) makes perfect!

Choose the right products

For the style results you want, start with the right shampoo and conditioner for your hair type. We prefer to avoid products with parabens and sulfates, which can dry out your hair. Watch as our ambassador and celebrity stylist, Derek Yuen walks through the lineup of NatureLab Shampoo & Conditioners.

Check your technique

Proper hair washing isn’t as simple as lather, rinse, repeat, but it isn’t complicated either. Before you get in the shower, gently brush your hair to remove tangles and loosen dirt and oil. Doing so will make it easier for you to massage your scalp with shampoo and help you avoid breakage. Next, make sure your scalp and hair are completely soaked with lukewarm water before you add any product.

Pump your favorite shampoo into your hands and rub them together to create a lather before massaging your scalp in circular motions with your fingertips. Focus on your scalp and roots but as you wash, allow the shampoo to rinse down the hair shaft.

When it comes to conditioner, don’t use too much and avoid applying it directly to your scalp. Instead, condition your hair from the ears down since that’s where your hair is dry and needs the most moisture. Let your conditioner do its thing for a few minutes before rinsing completely—cold water is best!

Don’t rush the dry

When you’re done rinsing, squeeze out the excess water in your hair before getting out of the shower. Then, instead of rubbing your hair with a towel, gently blot out water with a microfiber towel or t-shirt. Spend a few minutes doing this before you even think about styling! Your hair is weakest when it’s wet, so the more gentle you are during this step, the better. Finish with a protective leave-in conditioner or pre-style spray.
