Turn Up the Volume

Turn Up the Volume

We love summer for so many reasons—days at the beach, poolside bbqs, trips to exotic locales. But when it comes to our hair, it can be a hard season for keeping things fabulous...we’re looking at you humidity. Depending on your hair type, humidity can mean out-of-control frizz and unruliness. For others, it can instantly zap any volume from thin hair, leaving you with clingy, lifeless locks. As always, we have a few tricks up our sleeve to help keep your hair healthy and voluminous even in the dead of summer.

Moisturize Well

Humidity wreaks havoc by penetrating the hair cuticle. The first step in ensuring this doesn’t happen is to make sure your hair is hydrated before heading outside. It might seem counterintuitive to add moisture when it’s the exact thing you’re trying to fight against, but when hair is properly hydrated there’s less room for outside humidity to make its way in. Basically, when the cuticle is shut (proper hydration is key in accomplishing this), your hair is healthy and won’t be affected by the moisture in the air. We recommend using our Perfect Smooth Hair Oil on damp hair to strengthen and moisturize and a few spritzes of our Perfect Volume Texture Mist to add that extra body.

Wash Less

This might also go against logic, since most people think that keeping hair clean is the best way to ensure it doesn’t get greasy. But, if you can just dial back the shampoo a bit, the natural oils from your scalp will actually hydrate your hair, keeping that cuticle closed and humidity out.

Dry All the Way

Damp hair will turn limp as soon as it hits humidity. So, if you’re blow drying your hair, make sure it is completely dry to avoid the slump. Finish it off with a cool shot to help seal the cuticle and hold the style.

Dry Shampoo Does the Trick

Even when we do our best to combat humidity, sometimes it finds its way in. Dry shampoo can do wonders in a pinch—it removes excess moisture and also delivers instant volume. We carry it around for a midday touch-up.

Try A New Do

Summer’s also a great time to experiment with fun new styles like braids, twists, buns, and clips. They look great and help mask the effects of humidity.
