With the cold temperatures and harsh elements (we’re looking at you wind, snow, and freezing rain), winter is undoubtedly the season when our hair needs a little extra love. The weather outdoors paired with dry heat indoors is the perfect recipe for stripping our locks of life-giving moisture. So how do you avoid being left with a damaged, frazzled mess? Here are a few tips to help keep your locks healthy and happy throughout the season.
Deep condition on repeat
Now’s the time to reach for that deep conditioning treatment on the regs—at least once a week. Deep conditioning treatments penetrate the hair shaft to combat dryness from the inside out.
Turn down the heat
We all love a little extra warmth during the cold winter months, but when it comes to our hair, less is more. Heat styling sucks what little moisture might be left in our locks, so avoid blow dryers, hair straighteners, and curling irons as much as possible.
Do a pre-shampoo treatment
A simple yet effective way to keep your hair looking and feeling great is by doing a little pre-shampoo treatment. Grab your favorite oil (argan, coconut, etc.) and massage into your hair from the ponytail line down to the ends. Leave on for 15 minutes and then shampoo and condition as usual.
Take cover
Shield your hair from the elements with hats, scarves, wraps, whatever works for you. Pro tip: A satin-lined hat goes the extra mile in preventing dryness. And remember to avoid stepping outside with wet hair, where it can freeze and be more vulnerable to breakage.
Brush carefully
This one isn’t necessarily season-specific, but hair can be extra vulnerable during the winter, which is why it’s so important to take care when brushing your hair. You can find a brush that is good for your particular hair type, but a wide-tooth comb is great for avoiding damage.
