Let’s Talk Texture Types

Let’s Talk Texture Types

Straight, wavy, curly, coily. Hair texture is definitely not a one-size-fits-all situation. Your curl pattern is identified by the shape your hair makes, and whether it kinks, curls or twists around itself. Many people with textured hair can even have more than one type of pattern. But getting acquainted with your type is really helpful in making sure you’re using the right targeted products and caring for it in the best way possible. So we put together a short guide to help you do just that.

TEXTURE TYPES:

➰Type 1s are straight.

➰Type 2s are wavy.

➰Type 3s are curly.

➰Type 4s are coily.

Within each type there are sub-classifications from A to C, which are based on the width/diameter of your wave/curl/coil pattern.

➰Type A has a wider pattern size.

➰Type B has a medium pattern size.

➰Type C has the smallest pattern of the three.

Remember, you can have more than one type of texture, and hair cycles that take place every 3 to 5 years can cause texture to change altogether.

Here are a few tips by type:

TYPE 2

Treatment masks are a great way to combat frizz. It’s best to avoid products that contain heavy ingredients which may weigh hair down and cause it to look greasy and lifeless.

TYPE 3

This group is very prone to frizz. Therefore, deep conditioning a few times a month is vital to keep strands healthy and strong. Shampooing less frequently is also a good idea since we want to keep those natural oils in to work their magic. Always use a sulfate-free shampoo, and best to avoid sea salt as it dries hair out quickly.

TYPE 4

This type tends to be super dry, so extra conditioning is always a good idea—think hair masks, repair creams, and even oils if your hair responds well to that. Special treatments can be very helpful in helping maintain moisture and shine.
